When it comes to organizing, most people have a very hard time organizing their things or, once they are organized, keeping them organized. In fact, a lot of people will organize and then, within about a week, be back to their old ways.

So how do you not only organize your items, but also keep them organized throughout the year? Here are six organization golden rules you’ll want to keep in mind!

1. Spring Cleaning is a Serious Need

Spring cleaning shouldn’t only come once a year because it’s far too important. Spring cleaning is the time of year that you should be going through the entirety of your house (you can do this room by room or in bulk) to deep clean, remove items you no longer need and get yourself organized.

Without spring cleaning, the clutter in your house or on your desk can become overwhelming, so be sure to take advantage of this time to get everything in order. Don’t allow yourself to slack off here, as this is the groundwork for your entire organizational process.

2. Allow for Small Messes

Another thing to keep in mind from the beginning of your organizational process is that a small mess is a good thing. Remember that junk drawer your parents had when you were growing up? You should have one too.

I know, it sounds counterproductive, but it’s necessary. Allowing for this small, messy space is a great way to keep mismatched and miscellaneous items put away where they belong and where they are out of the way. Everything isn’t going to fit in a neat, organizational box, so this is the perfect place for any items that don’t have the perfect place.

3. Develop a System and Stick To It

Organization only works for those that do the organizing, so it’s important for you to develop a system that works for you and roll with it. If you need certain clothing items in drawers and certain items hung in the closet, be sure to develop a clear system for that and follow through with it (i.e. don’t haphazardly throw clothes into drawers later on because you don’t feel like hanging them up).

The key to staying organized is really consistency, so the more consistent you are with keeping your things put away in the right place, the more likely it’s to become a habit and you’ll always have a clean, organized living space.

4. Keep Up With Your Cleaning

One of the most important and easiest ways to stay organized is to keep up with your cleaning. For instance, if you clean once every several months, you’re going to have a much bigger, more overwhelming mess than you would if you cleaned once a week.

The more often you clean, the less time you’ll have to spend cleaning. For example, if you vacuum once a week, it’s going to take you much less time to hit every room than it would to vacuum once a month, as there’s going to be less mess to pick up.

5. Keep Things Together

As part of your organizational system, be sure that you are keeping similar items together and not spread around in several places. For instance, if you have a collection of throw blankets, you shouldn’t be storing them in the linen closet, the bedroom closet, the front hall closet and the ottoman.

Instead, come up with a location that makes the most sense for how you use the item, then store all items there. So if you only use blankets when you’re watching TV, storing them in your ottoman might make more sense than down the hall in the linen closet.

6. Share Your System

One of the biggest reasons people are unable to stay organized is because they share their home with another person or people. If you live with multiple people, this can be a bit of a challenge, there’s no doubt about it.

That being said, all you need to do is share your organizational system and you’re already a step ahead of the game. No matter what, you’re going to encounter people that don’t follow your system in its entirety, but it’s much easier to keep up with it on your end if you share that system and attempt to get everyone on board.

Again, staying organized is not as easy a task as it sounds, as it requires constant vigilance and dedication to the idea. That being said, when you are able to organize the space around you, you’ll feel more organized in other aspects of your life as well.

For that reason, keep these six organization golden rules in the back of your mind as spring cleaning time comes around, as you’re going to want them in your pocket. Organization doesn’t have to be a challenge so long as you keep up with your organizational system!

Happy cleaning everyone!
